The Future of Remote Work + Special Offer for You
Conscious leaders invest in themselves and their teams to create a more conscious workplace
As the way we work continues to quickly evolve, one thing is clear: flexibility and remote work options remain a priority for workers. But some companies are still resisting this growing desire amongst their staff. One objection is that there will be a lack of engagement or collaboration if teams aren’t brought together in person. Harvard Business Review just published a fantastic article addressing this concern: 4 Myths About In-Person Work, Dispelled.
Authors Heidi Grant and Tal Goldhamer walk readers through the myths that in-person learning is more effective, in-person events help create (or strengthen) culture, people need a break from their screens, and networking and connection can only be done in person.
What I appreciate most about the article is how Grant and Goldhamer acknowledge the importance of in-person meetings, but challenge the assumption that in-person is the only or best way to build strong teams and healthy organization culture.
They note that, “A recent survey found two-thirds of employees want some in-person work or collaboration opportunities post-pandemic. It also found that they want to be a part of a caring culture…” They go on to share some insightful tips for how to address the in-person myths and build a strong culture virtually.
Their conclusion is a powerful reminder for conscious leaders:
“Getting to a better tomorrow means being willing to critically question our assumptions about what people need to be engaged, fulfilled, and productive. It means not trying to grasp at what feel like “easy” answers, and instead accepting change and the hard choices that sometimes come with it. It means really listening to our people, trusting their judgment, and using the science of human behavior to create the optimal conditions under which they can connect and thrive.”
One of the coaching services I offer clients is helping them build strong remote teams. I believe organizations can only succeed as a whole if each person on the team is also succeeding. I’ve been an advocate for remote work for many years and I want to help companies provide this flexibility to their staff so we can create a more conscious workplace together.
In fact, back in 2020 I attended a virtual conference called Running Remote and I got to chat briefly with one of its founders, Liam Martin. Liam recently reached out to let me know he’s cowritten a book with Rob Rawson called Running Remote.
The book is designed to help leaders develop the mindsets and strategy needed to build and grow successful remote organizations from the ground up.
Liam recently sent me copies of his new book and I’d like to share his generosity with you, my Substack readers.
The first 8 readers to respond to this newsletter with their mailing address will receive a copy of the book.
As we build the future of work that works for everyone, I hope you’ll continue to invest in your and your team’s growth. Hopefully this newsletter is part of that investment. This week, look for ways to develop yourself and your staff in a virtual setting. What are the resources you can invest in and provide to your team?
Let’s be willing to question our assumptions, look beyond easy answers, and truly listen to our teams.
Work happy. Live happy. BE happy.
