As an advocate of conscious leadership, I’m sometimes asked, What constitutes consciousness? How is conscious leadership different from other forms of leadership?
My succinct response is: Consciousness is awareness of who you really are; awareness of the impact you have on others; awareness of your potential for impact and being a change agent.
Conscious leaders consistently invest in working on themselves so they can become more fully aware of their strengths and areas for growth and how they can have a positive impact on those around them. This elevated awareness often leads to incredible personal, professional, financial, spiritual and physical breakthroughs and growth.
Oftentimes we need a coach or trusted advisor to help us increase our level of consciousness. This is because we all have filters through which we see the world and these filters seem like they’re fused into our psyche. These filters are thoughts or programs we accepted earlier in life and now subconsciously direct our behavior.
With the help of a skilled coach, conscious leaders can become conscious of these filters and how they impact their thoughts, emotions and actions. This is the chain reaction that leads to all our behaviors: we first have a thought, which triggers an emotion, which leads to an action.
The thought is usually based on old programs or experiences: “If I speak up, they will laugh at me.”
Emotions then give power to the thought: “I feel embarrassed when people laugh at me like they did that one time in first grade.”
The emotion is so strong it can override logic and lead to undesired behavior such as silencing yourself because you fear others will laugh at you.
The more we become aware of this chain reaction of thought -> emotion -> action, we can decide if the thought is accurate or beneficial. We can decide if we want to give that thought juice through emotion. And we can ultimately decide what action we want to take.
At any point in this chain, we can pause, reflect, and decide. But it requires elevating our consciousness so we become aware of the chain reaction.
This week, I encourage you to become more aware of your thoughts and emotions and how they result in your actions. Working with a coach to examine your thoughts, emotions and actions will also help elevate your conscious leadership skills. As your consciousness rises, you will have more control over this chain reaction and thereby create more harmony and prosperity for yourself and those around you.
