I recently came across a quote that deeply resonated with me and speaks to the collective conscious awakening we’re all experiencing right now. The quote is from comedian and spiritual podcaster Russell Brand, who has openly shared with audiences about his own conscious awakening over the last decade. In 2017 when Brand was promoting his book about overcoming addiction, he made the following observation:
“Society is collapsing and people are starting to recognise that the reason they feel like they're mentally ill is that they're living in a system that's not designed to suit the human spirit.”
The last year has felt like a collapsing of old ways—even cherished ways of living, relating and working. It has been scary for many, but for others it has presented an opportunity to recognize how unhealthy we’ve become.
My goal for this newsletter is to support conscious leaders and help them build systems that do suit the human spirit. That’s why the quote so deeply resonated with me. Over the last several years (even pre-pandemic) many of us have felt that our spirits weren’t thriving in the systems that exist—especially in the workplace.
Brand goes on to address how we live and work:
"People are realising 'Hold on a minute, is it natural to work 12 hours a day? Is it natural that I live in an environment that is designed for human beings from one perspective but not from a holistic perspective?' Breathing dirty air, eating dirty food, thinking dirty thoughts. So really what this is, is a time of transition.
"Yes, the conversation is changing because the communication is becoming so much more expedient, but what's really changing is people are starting to notice that the system is not working for them."
This truly is a time of transition. If you’re one of the millions of people who recognize what’s going on and want to change it, you’re the conscious leader we need.
How do we go about creating systems that work for us? Brand offers some excellent encouragement:
"So just do what you think is the correct thing to do. If you think your school should be run differently, start running your school differently, and then when you find obstacles to that, confront the obstacles, but never alone, always in groups. The thing I've learned from recent conversations from people who are experts, like Prof David Harvey, is to start establishing systems you believe in, and operate within them.”
As a conscious leader, you can build a business that operates in a way that helps the human spirits of each team member thrive. Find a group of like-minded conscious leaders and start working on the obstacles. You can help build a movement by creating it yourself and connecting with those who share your vision for what soul-inspiring work and life can truly be. You can BE the change we so desperately want to see the in the world.
Work happy. Live happy. BE happy.
