A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by a reporter working on an article about whether it’s more important to do what you love or work for money. I shared a succinct response with her which you can read here. Essentially, I told her that it really depends on each person. It’s a deeply personal decision that each of us must make. After all, it can determine much of our life satisfaction for decades.
For some, the priority is FIRE (financially independence; retire early), so the focus is money, not love of the work. For others, feeling fulfilled every day outweighs financial gain or retiring early. As I shared with the reporter, I hope that with more conscious leadership, this will no longer be a choice we have to make in the future. We’ll all be able to have a financially stable life while doing work we love.
So how can conscious leaders bring about this balance of love and money in work?
First, consider whether you are truly aligned with your deepest desires. Each of us needs to pursue our own passions before we can empower others to do so. The change we want to see in the workplace starts with the individual. Too often when someone isn’t happy with their work, their team suffers from their lack of dedication or frustration.
Second, get to know your team. What are their passions? Did they feel forced to choose between passion or money? How can you help them more closely align with the passions that drive them, while also creating profit for the company?
Third, consider how you compensate your team. A core value of conscious leadership is a win-win-win for all stakeholders. Profit and passion can coexist, and abundantly so. How can you ensure that your entire team is compensated well and that their overall wellbeing is cared for? Conscious leaders can create a more prosperous future for all; it simply requires including abundance for all, not just a few at the top.
Ultimately, each of us creates a life based on our deeply held beliefs. Some believe that they must choose between prosperity and their passion. Others view that as a false dichotomy; living a life you love is living in abundance. It comes down to how you view the world and your life. So what perspective will you choose?
Work happy. Live happy. BE happy.
