My husband, Víctor, and I recently had the opportunity to visit Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. As a big Harry Potter fan, I was excited to experience The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I’d dreamed about tasting butterbeer ever since I read about it in the Harry Potter books. It was just as amazing as I thought it would taste. We had a wonderful time at the park; turning into kids once again as we experienced the joy and magic around us.
At one point Víctor was able to drag me away from Harry Potter so we could ride The Amazing Spider Man, one of his favorite super heroes. We’d been waiting in a socially-distanced line for about 30 minutes when I saw a group of 5 people cut right in front of us. I told Víctor, who hadn’t seen it happen, and he was incensed. He went to the nearest park employee and told them what had just happened.
When confronted by the park employee, the group of raucous line-cutters started taunting Víctor, but as a Venezuelan who has seen and experienced enough injustice in his lifetime, he stood firm. The park employee reprimanded the line-cutters then permitted us to use the express line for the ride. I was proud of Víctor for standing up for the rest of us patiently waiting in the line.
As we boarded the ride, I observed to Víctor, “The level of consciousness of that group is very low.” He completely agreed. It got me thinking about how on any given day, we interact with people who have various levels of consciousness. Some are very low; they are focused on themselves and what they can materialistically gain in this world. Others are very high; they are selfless, and see life as an opportunity to grow and create a more harmonious world.
You may work with colleagues who possess the level of consciousness of the line-cutters. It’s emotionally, energetically, and spiritually exhausting being in their presence. Hopefully you have the pleasure of working with high-consciousness colleagues who boost your energy, support your goals, and see every challenge as an opportunity for growth.
In life and work, we all will experience the low-consciousness line-cutters. The question to ask ourselves is, “How will I choose to respond to this interaction?” Will you choose to increase your own level of consciousness and therefore help raise theirs through your powerful presence? Or will you let their low level of consciousness overpower you? Will you allow yourself to stay in that situation and see your own level deteriorate? Or will you tap into your inner creativity and potential to create an environment where you’re surrounded by highly conscious peers?
The choice is yours.
