Curiosity, not Certainty, is the Key to Progress
Conscious leaders are humble and open to new beliefs
As we head into the final weeks before the 2020 Election, the energy in the United States can only be described as heavy; even toxic. As evidenced by many election season debates and ads, too often candidates and politicians seem to put agendas ahead of finding true solutions that serve all. They claim moral superiority for their beliefs and disparage the beliefs of others just to win an election and consolidate power.
When one side is convinced their beliefs are absolutely correct and the beliefs of others are absolutely incorrect, it leads to unhealthy tribalism that divides people instead of fostering harmonious coexistence. This is the very opposite of the conscious leadership that will guide our world towards more harmony and prosperity for all. In fact, conscious leaders understand that they don’t always have the answers.
Famed journalist and essayist H.L. Mencken once noted how being too certain of beliefs actually impedes cultural progress:
“Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others. His culture is based on "I am not too sure.”
There are countless historical examples of “status quo” beliefs in religion, science, or cultural mores impeding important advances for humankind. Only those who are curious and willing to challenge status quo beliefs move society forward. It’s not easy, but it’s necessary.
We need conscious leaders who are humble and curious. These leaders are confident enough to invite challenges to their assumptions and beliefs. They are solution-oriented, and always looking for new ways of thinking about things. They realize that some of the most innovative thinking comes not from experts, but from those who think outside the box or look at things with beginner’s mind. They are also humble enough to constantly work on themselves and their own view of the world.
Perhaps you’ve been questioning many of the systems and “this is the way things are” beliefs no longer serve us. If so, your consciousness is expanding and you are becoming a truly conscious leader. Coaching is a powerful way to continue this growth and prepare yourself for a future where conscious leaders transform the way we work, live and relate.
You can continue to grow and expand your consciousness. It’s not only essential for your own growth, but the progress of all humanity.
Work happy. Live happy. BE happy.
