Changing Your Ways, Skills for Mars, and Meditating in Medellin
A weekly roundup of the latest future of work and conscious leadership news and insights
This week I came across a news story that serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly the way we work, live and BE is changing.
Two days ago LA Times food editor Peter Meehan resigned due to allegations he was aggressive and abusive with staff. He announced his resignation on Twitter and said something every conscious leader should take note of:
“I wish I had seen myself how others did and changed my ways…”
This is a statement of regret. Because he never self-reflected or became conscious of his impact, it led to him losing his position. He goes on to lament “losing sight of people and their feelings.”
Working on yourself and becoming a more conscious leader is essential. It is the future of work and how we live. As Meehan also noted, “…this moment is about that: changing, challenging, and making things better.” Absolutely.
We are ascending past the age of old leadership where hierarchy, control and outright abuse was tolerated. People and their feelings matter wherever they are, whether it’s the workplace, home, community, etc. We are moving into a time where each of us is called upon to see how we impact others. It calls for deep introspection and increasing our energetic conscious leadership.
How are you changing and becoming the conscious leader that both the present and the future requires?
Here is some of the future of work and conscious leadership content I found interesting this week:
This week I had a delightful video chat with the talented Iulia Istrate in Amsterdam, who hosts the Skills for Mars podcast. Iulia has extensive experience in talent acquisition, leadership, remote team building, and a host of other valuable skills we need right now as we step into the future of work. Humans are already creating a way to eventually migrate to Mars, so Iulia talks to leaders about the skills we need now and in the future. Check it out!
Business Insider published a powerful story this week about how denying employees remote options is fundamentally unfair and detrimental. Working mom Megan Feldman Bettencourt shares her personal story of how an employer took away a one-day remote option, which forced her to step back from work and alter her career trajectory. She provides a compelling case for why remote work must become the new normal and how everyone—the workplace, parents, children—suffers due to antiquated workplace policies.
Earlier this week my newsletter and videos addressed vacation time and sabbaticals. My colleague Madison Ray then shared with me this Wall Street Journal article about how employees are reluctant to take vacation right now. Whether employees are banking it for post-pandemic lockdowns or feeling guilty while working at home, it is important that conscious leaders encourage time off and self-care. Some employers are actually mandating company-wide vacation to ensure their teams get much-needed rest during this tumultuous time. What are you doing for your team when it comes to vacation and ensuring teams stay healthy?
I’ve mentioned before how important meditation is for mental health and becoming a more conscious leader. One of my favorite meditation series is Deepak Chopra’s 21-Day Meditation, which he produces a few times every year and offers for free for a limited time. This week he released the latest, and he’s joined by J Balvin, a Colombian reggaetón artist. J Balvin is from Medellin, where my parents live, and one of the most energetically beautiful places I’ve ever experienced. Enjoy this lovely consciousness-raising meditation this weekend!
Work happy. Live happy. BE happy.
