Are You Completely Disconnected from Workplace Reality?
A weekly roundup of the latest future of work and conscious leadership news and insights
This week IBM released a study about the future of work. One of the key takeaways from the report is that “Employers significantly overestimate the effectiveness of their support and training efforts.” According to the survey, only half of employees believe their employer “is genuinely concerned about their welfare.” The study notes this is a “massive opportunity for leaders who can this right, when most seem to be struggling.”
They survey shows the vast gap between leadership and their teams:
74% of employers think they help their team learn the skills needed to work in a new way; only 34% of employees agree.
80% of employers think they are supporting the physical and emotional health of their team; only 46% of employees agree.
86% of employers think they provide clear guidelines and expectations for how the organization works; on 51% of employees agree.
There is clearly a disconnect between management and the reality most employees face in the workplace. How we work is changing, and employees expect their employers to be more empathetic and flexible. This isn’t just a phase during the pandemic; these are long-term trends that every leader needs to pay attention to.
As a conscious leader, you can help your team stay ahead of the curve and set an example for the rest of the workforce. That means engaging your empathy, listening intently, and making important changes. As IBM notes, the leaders who step into this future will have a massive impact and firmly establish their organization’s continued success.
Do you want to take advantage of the massive opportunity to lead well? If so, let’s connect. There has never been a better time to build your conscious leadership and lead your industry in changing the way we work.
Here is some of the future of work and conscious leadership content I found interesting this week:
McKinsey released its Women in the Workplace 2020 report and found that as a result of the pandemic, women face many challenges, often pushing them out of the workforce. The most concerning statistic is that many women feel they cannot bring their whole self to work. Conscious leaders know how to empower their team to bring their whole self to work and create the balance necessary to be a successful professional with a family and personal interests.
Jennifer Moss penned an excellent Harvard Business Review article about how empathetic leadership can prevent burnout. Moss shared that while many leaders think empathy equals the Golden Rule, it actually should be the Platinum Rule: “Do unto others as they would have done unto themselves.”
Dice published a fantastic article about how an employee can deal with a manager who struggles with remote work. One particularly useful tool for overwhelmed employees is the triple constraint theory. For managers with mood swings or who occasionally lash out, the CALM technique is beneficial.
Ragan featured a piece about advancing your career in a virtual setting. The author recommends the 3 R’s: review, reach and recreate. You are your own best advocate. In a remote workplace, standing out means being more intentional about how you share your accomplishments.
Work happy. Live happy. BE happy.
