A High-Performing Team that Can’t be Poached
Sound impossible during the Great Resignation? Not for conscious leaders
The workplace is experiencing a transformation not seen in decades. The U.S. is currently seeing the highest levels of workers quitting in nearly two decades. Due to the radical changes precipitated by the worldwide pandemic, many workers are either questioning their initial career choice, or are realizing they deserve better from their employer.
It’s a tenuous time for companies and organizations that want to build strong teams that will help them through tumultuous period full of challenges and opportunities. Forbes recently addressed one of the best ways leaders can ensure they build “a high-performing team that can’t be poached.”
The key? A cardinal principle of conscious leadership: Get to know what your team members really want and need!
According to the Forbes article’s authors, there are three important ways to do this:
Know Your People
If you’ve ever taken a professional assessment (Strengths Finder, Birkman, etc.), you know that everyone has different motivations for their work. Some people prioritize financial success; others prioritize personal satisfaction in a job well done. It’s important to not assume, but get curious and genuinely ask your colleagues what drives them. There’s no wrong answer because everyone is motivated differently.
See Your People
Ever worked really hard on something and others treated your result as if it was no big deal? There’s nothing more demoralizing than that. People get burned out and resentful when they feel that their work isn’t truly appreciated. We all want to be recognized for our work, even if it’s part of our job description. And it’s important to single out each person and acknowledge them based on their unique contributions. As the article authors note, “If you can say the same phrase to anyone on your team, this is a sign that the feedback isn’t unique or personal enough.”
Make it about Your People
One of the reasons coaching is so effective is that it is highly personalized to the client. Conscious leaders can find the same success engaging their team by personalizing their connections with each person. Everyone should feel they are an irreplaceable part of the team.
To accomplish this, leaders can leverage coaching skills such as asking insightful questions, engaging in active listening, and helping the other person realize their unique qualities and contributions.
While the changes happening in the workplace right now can be confusing and challenging, they are also a huge opportunity for conscious leaders to create a new way for us to work and relate so we can all work, live, and BE happy.
Work happy. Live happy. BE happy.
