Is your gym looking a little emptier this week than two weeks ago? Researchers found that the middle of January is when most people give up on their New Year’s resolutions. Almost half of resolution-makers quit their goal by the end of January.
The challenge with resolutions and setting goals is we often try to achieve them through sheer will power. We focus on getting to an outcome, without considering who we need to BEcome in order to achieve it.
Coach Rich Litvin shares a powerful insight that can help us set and achieve more powerful goals: “an impossible goal is a place to come from, not a place to get to. The real question is who must I BE in order to achieve that goal?”
Health and fitness are the most popular new year’s resolutions, but losing weight isn’t a goal. It’s the result of BEcoming a person who is healthy. The real goal is embodying the version of yourself who is at a healthy weight. If you want to run a marathon, your actual goal is to BE a person who runs marathons and has all the qualities and characteristics of such a person.
The challenge here is summed up in the title of coach Marshall Goldsmith’s classic book: what got you here won’t get you there. The person you’ve been got you to where you’re at today. That could be someone who is overweight and unhealthy. Or it could be someone who is incredibly successful but wants to reach a new level of success. Either way, who you’ve been won’t get you to the next level of achievement. You literally BEcome a newer, different version of yourself to reach that next level.
Dr Joe Dispenza expands on Litvin’s and Goldmsith’s wisdom with this observation: “You cannot see the way out of a challenge if you are looking at it every day from the same level of mind, emotions, thoughts, and feelings of the past.” Dispenza also observes, “If you want a new outcome, you will have to break the habit of being yourself and reinvent a new self.”
This is a valuable lesson for conscious leaders. If you want to transform the way we work into a more conscious workplace, or you want a prosperous business with a thriving team, it will require you BEing a more conscious leader. Create your goals from that state of being. Show up every day as a leader with a conscious workplace, a prosperous business and thriving team. The goal is not the destination, it’s a place to come from.
Work happy. Live happy. BE happy.
